Long-term Empathetic Partnerships with Laurent Silvestri

Episode 146 – 19 April 2022

Laurent Silvestri shares his winning approach to creating long-term, empathetic, partnerships based on his 20+ years of being a successful entrepreneur.

Laurent Silvestri has been an entrepreneur in the telecom industry for the last 25 years. He has founded multiple companies, surfing on the different waves since the deregulation of the French telecom industry. In 2005, he founded a French telecom service provider called OpenIP that merged with our Belgian counterpart, Destiny in 2020. Today he is a co-founder of the Dstny Group and holds the position of Chief Strategy Alliance Officer, working on sharing our vision and strategy and creating long-term links and partnerships between Dstny and its ecosystem.

Laurent shares two key elements that he has been using every day for a very long time and that contributed to his success.  The first one is his empathic culture. He likes to analyze all situations from different points of view and avoid looking at things too self-centred. You do not solve problems if you only analyze them from one side. The second one is his win-win state of mind. If you want to take a good decision or make a good deal, you must co-create it with the other party. What is the situation, how do the other party see it, what are the alternatives, and can I find a solution that will both serve my interests and please the other party? Being fair in all circumstances allows one to make the right decisions and helps explain them and have them accepted.

During the conversation, Laurent describes the below points on how create a long-term success story:

  • You must develop empathy to understand the situation, the alternatives and the other party’s belief and expectations.
  • You must develop a WIN-WIN state of mind. Solve your problems by solving the other party’s problem. Make sure that you find a fair deal.
  • You must co-create your story with the other party. Make sure that that story is clear for everyone, understandable and acceptable.
  • You must leave a good image of yourself, constructive, solution-driven, positive, fair and friendly
